 Yuri Gagarin was born March 9, 1934 (Klushino, Russia)
Died March 27, 1968 (Near Moscow, Russia).

In 1957 the former Soviet Union launched Sputnik,
the first man-made space satellite object.

Four years later, on April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut (astronaut) number 1
Yuri Gagarin made a successful orbit of Earth aboard the spacecraft Vostok.

As the first human to fly in space, Gagarin represented a technical triumph for the Soviet Union.

Although Gagarin did not make another space flight,
he remained a national hero and a leader in
Russia's cosmonaut training program
.
His death during a training mission in 1968 was mourned throughout the Soviet Union

In honour of the fiftieth anniversary of human space flight, the United Nations declared 12 April as the International Day of Human Space Flight.
 
 
Messages from Space Explorers to Future Generations
 

To pay tribute to the extraordinary journey of the men and women who have flown into space, and to capture their unique perspectives and experiences in a distinctive collection, the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), is inviting past and present space explorers to sign an autograph sheet and to provide a message that might inspire future generations.

This autograph album contains a copy of the signed sheets received from 68 participating space explorers from 20 nations as well as their messages in the United Nations official languages. The album also contains a copy of the autographs of Yuri Gagarin and Edward H. White on their visit to United Nations.

President Vladimir Putin congratulated the International Space Station crew as well as Valentina Tereshkova and Alexey Leonov, legends of Soviet cosmonautics, currently at the Vostochny Cosmodrome Launch Centre, on Cosmonautics Day.




Roscosmos : Cosmonautics Day and the 55th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin spaceport "East" met with the pioneers of space. On the Amur spaceport flew the world's first woman cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova and Alexei Leonov - the first earthling to walk in space. Legendary astronauts inspected the new spaceport facilities. Special attention - to the launch pad and the mobile service tower, which has already become the hallmark of the "Eastern". Before the first launch from the Amur land - 10 days.


Vladimir Putin signed Federal Law On State Corporation for Space Activity Roscosmos.
